Keep Product Identifiers Separate When Asking a Store a Question

Brand disclosure: This guide was prepared for Napattiga. The category links below lead to the brand's own store; this is not an independent product review.

A question about a bottle can involve several different numbers. Sending the wrong one may leave a store unable to identify the item, even when the number is copied correctly. Before contacting a seller, separate information about the product from information about your purchase.

Start with the item a shopper can recognize

Write down the product name, selected variant and stated quantity. Keep the product-page URL beside that description. A category such as shampoo, body wash or body cream helps explain what you are looking for, but a category link alone may not identify the exact bottle.

If the page offers several sizes or scents, record the selected option rather than only the page heading. Say whether your question concerns an item you are considering or one you already received.

Give each identifier its own label

Store SKU or item code. Copy it only if the seller actually displays one. Keep its label and punctuation. A store's internal item code should not be treated as a universal identifier that every retailer will recognize.

Barcode number. Record the digits shown beneath the barcode if support asks for them. Do not infer that a barcode proves authenticity, identifies the seller or gives a manufacturing date. A readable number can help a support team compare records, but it does not answer every product question.

Batch or lot code. If the packaging explicitly labels a code as a batch or lot, copy that label with the code. If an embossed or printed marking is unlabeled, describe where it appears and ask what it means. Do not invent a date by guessing how to decode it.

Order number. Keep this with your private purchase record. It identifies a transaction in a particular store's system, rather than the product category itself. An order number from one seller may mean nothing to another.

These fields need not all be present. Use “not shown” or “label unclear” instead of filling a blank with a guess.

Make a clean support note

A useful first message can be short:

  • Product name and selected option:
  • Product-page link:
  • Where the relevant code appears:
  • Exact visible label and code:
  • Question I need answered:

For example: “The marking is embossed on the bottom of the bottle and has no label. Can you tell me what this marking refers to?” That asks for an explanation without declaring that the marking is an expiry date.

If a photo would help, crop it to the product detail. Check that the image does not also reveal a shipping label, address, payment details or somebody else's information.

Send purchase details privately

Use the seller's official support channel for order-specific questions. Keep order numbers, receipts and personal contact details out of public posts. Provide only what is needed for the question, and avoid uploading an entire order confirmation when a product name and a cropped label photo would do.

The aim is not to collect every possible number. It is to give the right person a clear description, an accurately copied identifier and one answerable question.
